ABOUT THE EVENT
Tabletop photography is a versatile style of still-life photography, often DIY-focused, that involves arranging small objects on a surface like a table to create images for e-commerce, food, or lifestyle purposes, utilizing simple setups with natural window light or controlled artificial lighting, backdrops, and props to achieve professional results.
In this seminar, you'll learn how to use a camera to capture tabletop photos. The session will include a PowerPoint discussion of white balance, and exposure, depth of field and file type. Then, participants will take the remainder of the seminar time to photograph their subjects with the guidance of the instructor.
EQUIPMENT YOU SHOULD BRING:
- DSLR or Mirrorless Camera (Remember to charge your batteries)
- Tripod (if you do not have one, one will be available)
- Lens with a range of 50 to 100+ mm. (for example a 50 – 200 mm or 24 – 105 mm)
- Cable release (if you don’t have one, the camera self-timer will suffice.)
THIS SESSION WILL PROVIDE THE FOLLOWING SET UP AREAS & EQUIPMENT:
- Seamless backgrounds of black, white and antique white will be provided with a minimum width of 24 inches. (See photograph of setup.)
- Lighting will be provided with types:
- LED
- Incandescent
- Flash
- Flash (Professional soft box)
- Grey Card

ABOUT THE SEMINAR INSTRUCTOR
James Hojnacki
James Hojnacki is an accomplished self-taught photographer with a deep foundation in traditional film techniques. His photographic journey began in high school with 35mm film, later expanding into black and white film development and darkroom procedures while documenting college events for the yearbook. Following his studies, James built his own darkroom to further explore the nuances of the black and white genre.
Specializing in nature photography, James draws inspiration from landscapes found in nature centers and national parks. He has been an active exhibitor since the mid-1970s, showcasing his color and black and white work at area art fairs and photography competitions. Over the years, he has received numerous awards for his nature photography, photo art, and creative displays.
Currently, James shares his expertise as an instructor of Creative Digital Photography for High School District 211 Continuing Education classes. His work continues to be displayed through the North West Cultural Council at various local offices and libraries.
